Worksheets, quizzes, and varied practice
A worksheet that is twenty almost-identical recall items teaches almost nothing — the highest-leverage instruction you give the model is the question-type mix, the difficulty band, and the count.
The worksheet is the most-used and least-respected document in Nepali school teaching. It is photocopied at the corner shop for two rupees a page, distributed in the period after the chapter is taught, marked at home that night, and re-used for years if it works. Most worksheets that get re-used were not designed — they accumulated. AI can produce a worksheet in two minutes that is better than the one you have used for four years, but only if you stop asking give me a worksheet on factorisation and start asking the model to commit, on paper, to a question-type mix, a difficulty band, and a count.
Specify the question-type mix or get twenty recall items
The default failure mode of a generic worksheet prompt is twenty questions that all test the same shallow recall skill. Define photosynthesis. State three raw materials of photosynthesis. Name the green pigment. Where does photosynthesis happen? This is the worksheet your students fill in five minutes flat and learn nothing from. The model produced it because you did not ask for anything else.
The fix is to name the mix you want, in proportions, in the prompt itself. A reasonable default for a 20-question worksheet at NEB middle-school level is:
- 8 recall — straightforward retrieval from the textbook (
name,state,define). - 6 apply — the same concept in a new but bounded context (
given this leaf, label,if the sun is blocked, predict). - 4 analyse — multi-step reasoning, or compare-and-contrast (
compare photosynthesis and respiration in three ways). - 2 open-ended — short paragraph or position questions (
why does a plant in a dark cupboard die even with water?).
The proportions move with the level and the subject. For a Class 10 SEE-style maths practice, lean toward 5 recall / 10 apply / 5 challenge. For a Class 6 social-studies set on the Indus Valley Civilisation, lean toward 12 recall / 6 apply / 2 open-ended because the curriculum is genuinely recall-heavy at that level. Whatever the mix, you name it.
Three difficulty bands, one worksheet
The second instruction that materially changes the output is the difficulty band. The same topic can produce a tiered worksheet — easy, standard, challenge — without you running the prompt three times. Ask the model directly:
Produce a single worksheet on factorisation of quadratic expressions, NEB Class 9 level, with three difficulty bands clearly marked: 8 easy (single-step, integer coefficients, leading coefficient 1), 8 standard (two-step, leading coefficient up to 3, some negative roots), and 4 challenge (requires recognising a special form — difference of squares, perfect square trinomial, or grouping). Provide an answer key separated from the worksheet. Show one line of working for each standard and challenge answer.
Two things are doing work here. The bands have explicit mathematical definitions — leading coefficient 1, difference of squares, recognising a special form — so the model cannot quietly produce three easy questions and label one of them “challenge.” And the answer key sits at the bottom in a separate section, with one line of working for the harder items, which is what your students need to see when you mark their work back.
Four prompts you can paste tomorrow
Generic patterns are easier to remember than long instructions. Below are four prompt templates for the four most-asked-for practice formats at NEB middle and secondary level. Adapt the topic and the level; the structure stays the same.
1. Maths practice, 20 items, tiered — factorisation, Class 9.
Produce a worksheet on factorising quadratic expressions of the form ax² + bx + c, NEB Class 9 level. Mix: 8 easy (a = 1, integer roots, single-step), 8 standard (a up to 3, possibly negative roots, two-step), 4 challenge (special forms: difference of squares, perfect square, common factor first). For each challenge item, include a brief hint as a footnote. Provide an answer key with one line of working per standard and challenge item. Format as numbered list. Use only the methods taught in the NEB Class 9 textbook — do not introduce the quadratic formula.
2. Science short-answer set — water cycle, Class 7.
Produce a short-answer worksheet on the water cycle, NEB Class 7 science. Mix: 6 recall (name the stages, define evaporation, condensation, precipitation), 4 apply (given a scenario — a cloud over the Annapurna range — predict what will happen next), 2 analyse (compare the water cycle in a Terai paddy field and the Mahabharat hills), 2 open-ended (why are local water sources drying in many hill villages — answer in five sentences). Use only facts from the attached NEB textbook page. Mark any term you use that is not in the source. Answer key at the end.
3. English grammar drill — present perfect, Class 8.
Produce a present-perfect worksheet for NEB Class 8 English. 20 items mixing fill-in-the-blank (10), error correction (5), and sentence transformation from simple past (5). Use only verbs that appear in the NEB Class 8 textbook word list (attached). Avoid topics that require cultural knowledge the students may not have. Half the example sentences should use Nepali contexts — Pokhara, Janakpur, Tihar, momo, the SEE exam. Answer key at the end with a one-line explanation for each error correction.
4. Nepali व्याकरण — पदसङ्गति, Class 9.
कक्षा ९ का लागि पदसङ्गति विषयमा वर्कसिट बनाउनुहोस्। २० प्रश्न — १० सिधा पहिचान (कुन पद, कुन सङ्गति), ६ शुद्धीकरण (दिइएको वाक्यमा सङ्गति मिलाएर पुनर्लेख्ने), ४ रचना (आफ्नै वाक्यमा पदसङ्गति देखाउने)। NEB कक्षा ९ नेपाली पाठ्यपुस्तकको मात्र शब्द र उदाहरण प्रयोग गर्नुहोस्। उत्तर कुञ्जी अलग्गै राख्नुहोस्। शुद्धीकरण प्रश्नका लागि एक वाक्यमा कारण लेख्नुहोस्।
Notice that every template names the topic, the level, the textbook source, the count, the mix, the answer-key format, and at least one constraint that prevents the model from drifting (no quadratic formula; only verbs from the word list; only methods in the source). The constraints are doing more than the verbs — produce and make are interchangeable, but do not introduce and use only are not.
The verification step that catches the actual errors
A model that produces a worksheet will also produce an answer key, and the answer key will be wrong on roughly one to three items in twenty. This is the failure mode that catches teachers off guard, because the worksheet looks fine and the answer key looks authoritative. Verify before you photocopy.
The verification rule that works in practice is similar to the spot-check rule for OCR: you do not solve every item, but you do not trust the key blindly either.
- Solve the challenge items yourself. These are where the model fails most often. If the answer key for a factorisation challenge says
(x − 3)(x + 7)and the original wasx² − 4x − 21, multiply it back:x² + 7x − 3x − 21 = x² + 4x − 21. Wrong sign on the middle term. The key is wrong. Find it now or find it after you have marked thirty students wrong. - Pick three standard items at random and solve them. If any of those three are wrong, solve the remaining standard items. If all three are right, move on.
- For science and humanities short-answer, cross-check facts against the source. Open the textbook, find the page, verify. Anything the model added that is not in the textbook is suspect; either delete or verify against a second source.
- Read the open-ended prompts as a teacher. Are they answerable in the time you have given? Is the framing one your students can actually engage with? Open-ended questions that are too vague produce one-line answers and waste a marking period.
Reusable templates beat one-off prompts
After two or three worksheets, you will notice you keep typing the same instructions: answer key at the end, one-line working per harder item, Nepali contexts where natural, do not introduce material outside the NEB textbook. Save these in a notes file as a header block. Each new worksheet is then a three-line change at the top — Class 10, science, sources of energy, attached textbook page 47 — and the rest of the structure reuses mechanically.
The teachers I have watched do this seriously end the term with a folder of ten or fifteen worksheet templates — one per question type they actually use — and the only thing they retype per worksheet is the topic and the source page. The first worksheet takes twenty minutes. The fifteenth takes four.
A note on differentiation that connects this section to the next one: tiered worksheets — easy / standard / challenge — are one form of differentiation, but they are not the whole of it. The next section is about producing parallel versions of the same material, so a class of forty-five can work at three different levels on the same concept in the same period without anyone being publicly labelled. That is a different prompt pattern, and it is where AI lets you do something you could always have done but never had the time for.

A tiered worksheet is one form of differentiation, but it is not the whole of it.
